BACKGROUND: et voila

PERSONALITY:

Dr. Stephen Strange is a man in a new phase of his life.

Once an egotist famed for his work in neurology, Stephen Strange’s life of privilege kept him rude, arrogant and ever so willing to listen to the sound of his own voice. Remember all those cool conferences we went to where I talked about myself and sounded clever a lot, Christine? Didn’t you love those? No, Stephen. Nobody loved those. It’s cute that you’re self-absorbed enough to think anybody else was having a good time. For all the bravado, this personality was constructed on a foundation of desperate fear of failure, his success born of an almost neurotic perfectionism that made him far from kind: he would take on only the patients he knew he could fix, look down on colleagues whose work was less than perfect, avoid risk at all costs.

Hubris eventually got the better of him. Think you’re invincible for long enough and eventually you’re going to drive your million dollar car right off a cliff while taking a look at the brain scans of a potentially career-enhancing patient and wake up with hands that will never be the same again.

These days he’s still got a few of his old flaws. He may have moved past his old arrogance, but that doesn’t mean he’s not well aware of his own power and intellect and happy to bring someone down a peg or two if they try to bring that into question. His life so far has given him an easy confidence that’s more than happy to direct itself back at people willing to match him like for like.

On the flipside of that, Stephen’s spent so long being agreed with, nodded along to and heralded that it really gets through to him when someone is willing to question him, stand their ground and prove that his word isn’t always gospel. He knows that for himself, but when you go from being at the top of the neurosurgical field to a sorcerer with the power of dimensions at your fingertips, it’s important to be brought back down to earth and held accountable sometimes.

Stephen’s got a sharp tongue and a quick wit, much more mature than he once was by merit of understanding the universe and having died a couple of hundred times but also ready to crack a ridiculous joke or throw out a musical pop culture reference nobody needed. He’s not at all good at being uncomfortable or emotionally vulnerable - humour, scathing commentary and pedantry are a great fallback.

Being an emotional man who’s very poorly practised in the art of being an emotional man, he’s learned that he has to be careful. With a proven tendency to act rashly when driven by fear, hurt or confusion, he takes pains now to both be more aware of his emotions and to try never to let them overpower his reason. This emotional caution and his lack of practice with forming friendships doesn’t make him the most likable of men. Coupled with his dry humour and lack of interest in sugar-coating, it’s actually very easy to want to avoid him at all costs. He might be a better man than he used to be, but it’s only made him slightly more tolerable.

Speaking of reason, he’s a think before he acts kind of a man. A good judge of character and well practiced at using that mind of his to think strategically, he’ll fit the solution to the problem rather than respond impulsively. Far from the risk-averse man he used to be, he tends to focus on the potential an action has to benefit others, the personal risks he’s willing to take rising proportionally with the cost his inaction would have on other people.

With all his power and responsibility, it’s been crucial to develop his kindness. He’ll often be an asshole about being kind, but he didn’t have to transport the Odinson brothers to their dying father after Thor put an umbrella through all his display cases and Loki tried to knife him.

And besides, he’s a doctor. He’s always cared about people, the sentiment just got a little lost in the middle there.

Being a doctor and having taken his oath, he’s also a pacifist… to a degree. Where possible, he’ll avoid actively killing as a means of solving problems, but he’s not going to quibble too much over a maiming here and there if it’s absolutely necessary. Or, you know, sending some people off to become space zombies in the dark dimension. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Last but not least, Stephen has a hunger for learning, a vast imagination, an eidetic memory and a mind that’s proved itself able to adapt to the crossing of dimensions and manipulation of time. Once he’s set on a path he’ll learn furiously, seeking out answers and self-development by any means.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

A full breakdown of both his magical and non-magical abilities can be found over here in the powers/abilities section.

Nerfs/limitations that I can think off off the top of my head:

- The Time Stone’s just going to go ahead and not be anything more than a pretty green stone in-game, we’re just not going there.
- Interdimensional travel will need to go! If only because otherwise he’d hop off home - however, if it’s okay to still keep things like personal pocket-dimensions so he can store his stuff and not be constantly worried that somebody’s going to steal the time stone that would be tip top.
- His teleportation is already limited to places he’s been/seen, but will need to be limited to whatever boundaries you recommend in-game.
- Player permission will be needed prior to use for: conjuration of other characters’ property, transportation of other characters, and the use of any magic that might create an unfair advantage or remove a character’s freedom of choice or movement.

INVENTORY:

- Cloak of Levitation, his swanky mystical cloak that allows him to levitate and hover around.
- Sling ring, the device through which he channels his magic to move at will through space.
- Eye of Agamotto, the magical artifact which houses the time stone - mostly defunct.
- Time Stone, the infinity stone with power over time - inactive.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis.
