I'll answer the last question first, as I think it colors the other answers:
I feel like my memories are fine, but when I try to dig deeper sometimes the information doesn't make sense. For example, I did a minor healing spell. I remember them working for things like fatigue, minor flesh wounds, etc at home. More severe spells can heal major breaks and even death if done quickly enough. I also have a memory of them healing day to day sicknesses like flu and headaches. But when I try to think about who had magic, and why we had sickness at all if curative magic was available, I can't piece it together. I know I learned it in school. I know many other people knew how to use it. I also know people got sick, when that magic should have cured it. I can recall the symptoms or sensations of sicknesses I've had, but any memories of directly having been sick are hazy.
I specifically tried to cure a migraine. It cleared up in two days, which my patient said was their normal run time.
The visual I think is more or less correct. It's like illusions. I can cause visual effects, like a lightning bolt or the image of fire, but there's no materiality. I can also cause people to see or not see things -- for example, make an ID card look like someone else's name or photo. It doesn't alter the object though and I haven't determined exactly how it works; sometimes some people see through it. Sometimes I have trouble dropping it.
[ The information goes noted and tucked away for cycling back to. He has a few more questions before he can start to make anything of it. ]
So the spell failed to increase the rate of recovery. And the transference you mentioned? You ended up with a migraine?
These illusions appear when you're attempting to cast spells that previously manifested differently? There's quite a gap between a lightning bolt and an ID card. Was that experimentation based on theory or an accidental discovery?
Yes. I previously could cast various elemental combat spells, healing spells, and a number of spells related to invisibility, creating decoys, and the like.
Mostly accidental discovery. I've experimented a little with the invisibility and decoy spells, but not the others.
It sounds like you're dealing with a limitation on the spells themselves caused by the difference in universe, or an entirely new power shaped by your attempts to access the old. Possibly a combination of the two.
Looking at the gaps in your memory, do you have any reason to believe the transference wasn't always a side effect of your healing spells?
I was concerned that might be the case but hoping for another prognosis, at least on the healing. I can say with certainty the transference was never a side effect; magic at home works from an omnipresent energy force that users manipulate. There was no way to transfer.
I did have the goal of removing the migraine as opposed to accelerating the process so perhaps that is something to investigate; the illusions seem dependent in part on my intent.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but if you're going to experiment, make sure to keep it small. You don't want to gift yourself a broken arm in the process of trying to heal somebody else's. It could be a muscle that needs flexing and the transference will diminish over time or it may be the way things are for you now, but you'll need to determine that before you risk bigger fixes.
If you need any assistance running controlled experiments, I don't mind volunteering some time.
