[ and here we go, straight into business. Stephen is under no illusions that Markus might be ignorant to any of what was discussed in the often unfortunate mess that became of Gaby's post, so at least he won't need to rehash.
he's spoken to others in the interim. taken enough space to gather opinions together and try to make something even of them. ]
Close enough to. If we want to keep this both palatable for everyone [ meaning those both pro- and anti- segregation ] and achievable in as short a timeframe as possible, we'll need to keep it operating on a small scale, prioritising new arrivals. A place for them to go when they're found, to wait out the time until they've got their IDs, somewhere they can stay for a short time after while they're finding new jobs and accomodation. Nothing fancy. The necessary medical equipment and resources to support everyday living, but a simple location designed to house a small number of people who might need it, along with a team of those of us who have been here longer ready to answer questions. Others are free to come and go at their own risk should they feel the need to pay a visit, we ensure the new arrivals are taken good care of and brought up to speed, the team on duty is small and consists of people who can be relied upon not to do anything stupid or be manipulated into making a mistake.
If the rest of us want a home base, something bigger where more of us can gather, live if necessary, house any more elaborate equipment or any weaponry of our own, that's something separate. Something to aspire to in the long run, I think, but for one it's going to take a lot more money than we currently have and for two the security will need to be that much better.
[ which means not leading a host of new arrivals away from a scene where their abductors or anyone else who happened to take an interest could easily be tailing the route and straight into their ~secret lair~.
Fitz had made a solid point: a small, simple safehouse full of a handful of confused refugees can easily be explained away, or at least can't be made that much of. a base of operations for a much larger collection? not so much. ]
[He had kept an eye on all the conversations that transpired across Gaby’s post, even slotting himself into ones that begun to spiral a little out of control. Perpetually sinking himself into the mired of Being Always Tired, yet perhaps he’s in good company where that much is concerned.
Pressing his elbows onto the hard surface of the table, leaning forward with obvious earned attention, Markus listens without interrupting. And when his turn is prompted, he inhales briefly, considering.]
I agree with the general sentiment of keeping the safehouse smaller, low-key, and something that doesn’t draw unneeded attention. Morningstar’s already presented us with a good example of how it should function, and what resources we’ll need to get it off the ground and keep it running. We’ll still need an actual location, but Gaby’s trying to get us a list that we’ll be able to work with soon.
Right now, we don’t have the means for anything larger. We’re lucky that Gaby and El are even willing to help with the set-up. A home base might be something to consider in the future, but right now I’m still not convinced that it’s something that we’ll ever really need.
[He leans back, brow cinching.]
These ‘reliable’ individuals, the ones who would help get the new arrivals up to speed — who do you think would qualify?
[ good. not straying too far from the same page is a plus this early on in proceedings. Stephen listens close, nods is agreement when Markus surmises... though his question brings a slight downturn to his mouth that's a small tick of amusement trying hard to masquerade as a frown.
arguably, he'd need to actually know people beyond a passing familiarity to have an answer to that. ]
Yourself, Connor, [ Gaby seems to trust Markus, and it doesn't take a genius to surmise that Connor's heart is firmly in the right place which, combined with a considered way with words, would make him a decent people keeper ] me. Leo Fitz [ just in case he's not tired enough, ] possibly Clarke. I don't think we should discount Hafid, provided he's mitigated by others.
We'll need enough that's it's not always the same people, for the sake of anyone who has a job they can't ditch on the semi-regular.
As it stands, my own schedule is relatively flexible. My priorities would be keeping the newcomers safe and to have them settled as soon as possible; I won’t need to be rotated out, not in the foreseeable future.
[Just so Stephen is aware that he is committed to this transition; that he’s not going to leave everyone twisting in the wind after all is said and done.]
We would run it by these people, of course, but I have a feeling they’d all be willing to lend their aid. I can’t completely speak for Connor— [EXCEPT HE’S GOING TO] —but I know that he’s often eager to help. His interests usually align with mine.
[Add it to a growing list of things to take care of. They’ve only just begun, and Markus wishes that he still possessed an android’s mind to keep all the details in line, all the priorities queued up neatly to be referenced later.
A beat.]
Hafid, though; I know this a small sticking point in the overall bigger picture, but he’s the one who suggested we keep the newcomers segregated from the rest. Do you still think he’d be an unbiased choice?
[ Stephen's in the same boat as Markus on that, the benefits of being recently unemployed, and the idea of having a core team consistently available is good. together, they can create a more stable protocol than they'd be able to if they were only manning the safehouse every other batch.
he's careful to keep his smile to himself (he was right to ask to what extent Markus and Connor are interlinked - enough, seems to be the answer here.)
as for Hafid, the question's not unwarranted. but, ]
You're politely ignoring how ardently I also argued in favour. [ Hafid wasn't the only one on Team Isolate for a while there, though Stephen may have been slightly more moderate on the matter, and Stephen still doesn't believe it to be a bad idea overall. and yet here they are, extremes dropped and two schools of thought merged together, the sharp edges shaved off. a compromise. ] He's more reasonable than he seems, and he has some good ideas for all he struggles to express them. And if it's a question of bias, we ought to be equally cautious of both of them.
[ he doesn't mean it: he's not no intention of calling Connor's suitability into question, and The Hafid Issue is bigger than just that. but it's worth thinking about. ]
Ultimately, his biggest concern is the safety of the group. I think the same can be said for all of us. Better to keep him in and checked than out and angry.

[Stephen’s quite right — interlinked is one word for it. There are a multitude of others that might apply, but anyone with eyes can see that the two of them are connected in some way. But maybe that's neither here nor there, and if it isn’t thrown into question, Markus has no need or reason to explain it.
And the other man is right about something else; regarding the separation issue, he is politely ignoring it. Or rather, stepping around it as if it were bramble to be carefully navigated around — not to be thrown face-first into, much like what Hafid and Connor had displayed for the rest of the network to see.]
You argued in favor, but you kept a straight head. [That was a glaring difference.] But maybe making an assessment of Hafid’s character so quickly is unfair for me to do, especially since irritation is a… two way street.
[One doesn’t just argue with oneself, after all.]
So I’ll take your word for it. It might help some of his anxieties about the potential dangers of the new arrivals if he can be there to supervise each new wave.
[ Markus' assessment of the situation speaks well for him. on Connor's side but not at the expense of reason, willing to see past argument to the crux of an issue and waive judgement until evidence is fully explored.
all the praise Fitz had handed out is well founded. they're going to be efficient.
nodding his agreement. ]
I'll take responsibility for him. And for dealing with it if he's not what I think.
[ that issue wrapped, Stephen switches tracks. ]
I'll also be able to prioritise this. If we can both be there as a fixed core, alongside Gaby and El to whatever extent they're able to help, we ought to be able to establish something that works consistently in the long run.
Anybody else you think we approach about it, starting out? Ultimately we'll need to be prepared for people to volunteer regardless, but it'll be easier to manage that once we've got a selection of people we know we can count on.
[Subject wrapped for now, but putting momentum behind making things happen is often the part that many struggle with. Logistics are easy to talk about, harder to put into motion, but there's no point in getting themselves stuck on the smaller details today, when this conversation is meant to work in broad strokes.]
It's a shared responsibility. I'll help, even if the decision was originally your call.
[The clarification is essential -- no one has to tackle any problem alone. Markus, ever the man focused on solidarity.
But now, they move on. Next subject is of priority interest, anyhow.]
I can't speak for anyone's schedules, but I know of those who will be more than willing to help. It's just in their nature. Two young men, Noctis and Prompto. And Keith, he showed interest in getting suggestions through the door, regarding just how to set up this safehouse. I think we can expect for him to be just as involved as the rest of us.
[ it's more and more obvious with every passing remark why Markus' praises are so highly sung. Stephen nods is acknowledgement and acceptance - shared load really is the only way they're going to get this done.
and good. they're starting in solid, especially if one of those number has already expressed ideas regarding how to actually establish the safehouse itself. ]
Great. So we get in touch with them, see who's interested in involving themselves and to what degree they think they'll be available, see if everyone's happy with the basic idea. Then we can approach Gaby and El with our plan, see what they've got by way of location and begin to discuss to what extent we can ask the help of Morningstar in setting up.
Once we've got that far, it'll be time to open it to the floor.
